INDUSTRY, RESEARCH AND ENERGY (ITRE) COMMITTEE VOTE ON THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY DIRECTIVE – A STEP TOWARDS IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

Print

28 November 2017: Following today’s vote on the Energy Efficiency Directive in the European Parliament’s Energy Committee (ITRE), the European Fuel Oxygenates Association (EFOA) would like to welcome the positive outcome of the vote.

In particular, EFOA welcomes the approval of the Amendment 524, which opens an opportunity for Member States to use an untapped efficiency potential offered by higher performing fuels. This technical adjustment of the Energy Efficiency Directive brings a needed recognition of the added value of efficient and clean blending components of fuels in decarbonisation of transport, and helps in Europe’s attempts to move towards low emission mobility.

We would like to encourage Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to further endorse this amendment during the European Parliament’s Plenary vote in January 2018.

Higher performing fuels used in transport offer benefit to the environment as they decrease air pollution and GHG emissions. They bring benefits for consumers as for example high octane fuel ethers improve fuel consumption and allow cars to run longer distances with the same amount of fuel.

They also support the uptake of alternative powertrains by increasing the fuel efficiency and emission reduction potential of hybrid engines. These improvements make hybrid vehicles a more attractive choice and could boost consumer interest. Simply put, they represent a cost effective solution Europe can’t afford to miss.

For more information about high performing fuels, please consult EFOA brochure or contact Ewa Abramiuk-Lété, Secretary General of EFOA at 0032 2 676 72 78.

ABOUT FUEL ETHERS

Fuel ethers, including bio-MTBE, bio-ETBE, bio-TAME and bio-TAEE, are key components for the production of high octane fuels. They increase petrol’s performance, while reducing the emissions of air pollutants such as and CO2 across the life cycle.

ABOUT EFOA

Created in 1985, the European Fuel Oxygenates Association (EFOA), a sector group within Petrochemicals Europe at Cefic, represents the voice of European producers of blending components of petrol called fuel ethers. EFOA is recognised by the European institutions as a valuable stakeholder on fuel quality and automotive emission reduction issues. It actively promotes constructive co-operation with all stakeholders including regulators, industry, NGOs etc.
